Chianti Classico Gran Selezione ‘Coltassala’

Category:

Coltassala Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo, aged 18 months in French oak, offers elegance, structure, and refined aromas.

The Coltassala vineyard holds a special place in the history of Castello di Volpaia, sharing its name and location with the villa where the estate’s vinegar-making equipment is housed. This unique site is divided into two parcels, facing southwest and southeast, stretching up opposing hillsides separated by a seasonal creek. Originally planted in the 1960s, the vineyard was regrafted in 1977 with the finest Sangiovese clones available at the time, significantly increasing its density to 2,306 vines per acre.

The first harvest from the renewed Coltassala vineyard took place in 1980 and marked a milestone for Castello di Volpaia: the creation of their first “Super-Tuscan,” a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo. Since then, Coltassala has continued to evolve, undergoing gradual replanting over the last two decades to maintain vine health, enhance density, and preserve an average vine age of 20–25 years.

Today, grapes from Coltassala are dedicated exclusively to the production of the estate’s flagship wine, Coltassala Chianti Classico. Since 1998, this bottling has carried the prestigious D.O.C.G. Chianti Classico Riserva designation, and since 2015, the even higher Gran Selezione status. With its sandstone soils, high elevation of around 500meters above sea level, and Guyot training system, Coltassala perfectly embodies the elegance and complexity of Volpaia’s terroir.
